Reinstallation of the Wolfsonian Collection

The Wolfsonian seeks funding to enable it to reassess its entire collection and to revamp the museum’s galleries and spaces to display an entirely new selection of objects and materials selected from the Wolfsonian collection. The Wolfsonian began as a private collector’s vision and matured as its curators developed their own interpretations of the collection and its context. Now, armed with 17 years of experience, much more knowledge about the collection, and new opportunities provided by digital technologies, The Wolfsonian is ready to reinterpret its vast permanent collection and reinstall its fifth floor galleries to better convey the role of design as an active agent in human affairs. The museum anticipates that audiences will enjoy a completely reinvigorated experience and see collection objects that have never before been on view.

The reinstallation project grows out of the Wolfsonian’s mission, which is to use objects to illustrate the persuasive power of art and design, to explore what it means to be modern, and to tell the story of the social, political and technological changes that have transformed our world.

Support from the National Endowment for the Arts and others has enabled The Wolfsonian to convene consulting scholars with expertise in its collection’s themes and develop a plan to guide the reinstallation. Among the exciting changes that will result from this project are: all new gallery installations, new exhibitions, renovated facilities, and access to fascinating objects never before on public display.

The most comprehensive collection of early modern design in the world.R.W. Apple, Jr., New York Times
What is wonderful about this collection is that it gives a richer picture of visual culture than almost any other design museum that I know.Patricia Kirkham, Design Historian, Bard Graduate Center, New York
