The William Perez Scholarship is designed to support and foster learning among students within the humanities.
William Perez began his career at FIU as a law enforcement sergeant for Public Safety in November 1986 and retired in October 2007. He rejoined the FIU family in October 2010, proudly serving the Office of the President as a presidential aide before transitioning to FIU Libraries in 2013 as a police service technician for the Green Library.
Affectionately referred to as Willy by those who knew and loved him, William Perez was a first-generation immigrant from Cuba who lived a vibrant life filled with continuous learning and enrichment. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice in 2009 at the age of 70. And in recent years, Willy realized a long-time aspiration of learning to play the piano and read sheet music.
Those who had the chance to meet Willy can vouch for his commitment to his work and the FIU community. This scholarship represents William Perez, a hard worker who lived his life to the fullest and was always striving to accomplish new goals.
