Visible Thinking South Florida is a Florida International University community engagement initiative integrated by pre-service teachers, graduate students, alumni and early childhood practitioners from schools from Miami-Dade and Broward counties. South Florida became a leader in Visible Thinking under the direction of Dr. Angela K. Salmon and a few key early childhood students committed to creating cultures of thinking in their early childhood classrooms through action research. Visible Thinking South Florida’s mission is to build thinking communities of practice in early childhood by promoting understanding and enhancing learning, thinking, and creativity in the arts, as well as humanistic and scientific disciplines. To fulfill its mission, the group holds a conference every other year for 150 participants worldwide, including representatives from 8 countries and 16 states, to participate in high quality research based professional development.
Visible Thinking is an integral component of Project Zero, an educational research group at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. They work closely with Dr. Salmon to investigate how to enhance learning, thinking, and creativity in the arts, as well as humanistic and scientific disciplines at the individual and institutional levels.
Funds will be used to advance the mission of Visible Thinking South Florida, particularly to support operations of the bi-annual conference. As part of support for the conference, these funds will be used to support student participation, fees, and other materials and supplies as needed.
